Our first landscape design project was completed in Tucson, Az, you can see a picture of this design on the right. In the first design we created a xeriscape, (low water) landscape design that features a flagstone patio and fountain water feature. This job was a example of a new landscape design for a new home. The design features a large open curved flagstone patio that doubles as a outdoor entertainment area with beautiful city views. Plant materials include, rosemary, lantana, lady banks rose as a espalier hedge along the backwall. Also included in this design is a small rose garden around the fountain as the client desired to grow some roses so we included them in this desert southwest design

In landscaping many elements can be used to create a illusion or to break up the usual square or rectanglar elements of a backyard. Though the use of curved elements such as walkways, boundaries, and beds can sometimes give the illusion of extended space in landscaping. The brain and eye can recognize the additional distance traveled from one point to the next. In this case, the curves add expanse as well as taking away from the sharp square corners of the home.

In the picture at the left is an example of a landscaping plan that resulted from a yard redesign. Before this yard contained a large expanse of lawn with a single brick walkway leading from the front gate to front door. It was very dull and lifeless.

In the redesign the clients main request for her landscaping ideas was less lawn. I knew that I wanted to border the entire yard in bedding but that still seemed a bit uninteresting. In the rethinking of the yard it was suggested that making the entire border into a flagstone walkway.

What this did was make this landscape more of a garden while the flagstone added to the Southwest feel of this Arizona landscape. Now you could take a journey around the pathway and enjoy the entire yard the result of the redesign is picture at the right.

In this redesign the original lawn was a messy mix of several different grasses. So we suggested the lawn be removed the entire mess and replaced the new lawn area which features a Fescue sod. This allowed for a more uniform lawn that will be easier to care for as properly maintain. These are just a few examples of our design work and capabilties. It is also important to remember that proper plant selection is one the most important "secrets" in successful landscaping. Plants and colors are the "flavors" that bring your garden to life. They're also elements that can be used with purpose such as screening, shade, erosion control, dividing, focal points, noise control, etc. So propagation of or choosing the right plants for the right place and purpose is helpful for professional looking, working, and manageable landscaping.
